The One Thing Busy Moms May Be Missing (Part 1)
Have you ever felt stuck in a moment, wondering what you could have done to make it go differently?
Have you wished you had reacted differently, but felt like something is ingrained within you, that makes it impossible to change?
Maybe you even know that these actions are coming from your mind,
But you're not sure what has led you here or that you even have a choice in your emotions
It can be a maddening feeling - even a broken or shameful feeling.
Something inside tells you you have a choice, yet you’re unsure how to reach it.
It feels frustrating and helpless
I’ve been there, and I want to tell you how learning about self-awareness has been the BIGGEST THING to get past this helpless feeling.
It has shifted my outlook on almost everything in my life and give
Over the next three blog posts, I want to share what I’ve learned about self-awareness and how it changes the lens through which I see the world.
In this 3-part series, I’ll break down:
What self-awareness is as a busy mom chasing your dreams
How to practice self-awareness in a fast-paced world
How to leverage self-awareness as your superpower
What is self-awareness?
Let’s start at zero. What the heck is self-awareness? Maybe you’ve heard the term but you aren’t exactly sure what it means.
The Oxford dictionary defines self-awareness as “conscious knowledge of one's own character, feelings, motives, and desires.”
A recent article by Better Up psychologists Shelley Dival and Robert Wicklund proposed this definition: "Self-awareness is the ability to focus on yourself and how your actions, thoughts, or emotions do or don't align with your internal standards. If you're highly self-aware, you can objectively evaluate yourself, manage your emotions, align your behavior with your values, and understand correctly how others perceive you.”
Wow…are you starting to see how this affects almost every piece of your life?
So what, how can this help?
Understanding yourself is one of the most considerable gifts you can give.
Understanding yourself is essential to ensure a life well-lived
Understanding yourself means understanding the good AND the bad.
Getting off the speeding rollercoaster
Instead of constantly running and cringing at emotional moments, self-awareness allows us to stop and reflect:
A busy life says “I don’t have time”
Self-awareness says “I will make time for what is important”
A busy life says “Yes” to every request out of fear of missing out
Self-awareness says “No” to make room for the things that matter
A busy life says “I am stressed and have no control over this situation”
Self-awareness says “I can choose to pause and reflect about alternative solutions”
A busy life says “I have no time for self-care”
Self-awareness says “I will make time for self-care because if I don’t I know everything else will suffer”.
Let’s get off the busy roller coaster of life, even if momentarily.
Let’s pause and protect our well-being because without it we are no good to anyone, especially not ourselves.
To recap, self-awareness is a conscious knowledge of ourselves and our actions, emotions, and decisions.
It can empower us in many ways and help us get off the busy rollercoaster.
I hope you found the first part of this series inspiring. Keep an eye out for Part 2 to find out more on HOW to practice self-awareness in a fast-paced world
