Three Self Care Tips For Busy Moms Who Need A Break
What Mom Has Time for Self-Care?
“I’m a busy mom, how in the world can I expect to make time for self-care?!”
While it seems to be everywhere these days, self-care can seem elusive and impossible to achieve.
As a busy mom…
We’re up at the crack of dawn: packing lunches, driving SUVs, checking emails, falling behind, racing back to daycare, making dinner - phew, it's exhausting.
We run from place to place to place.
We forget to make time for ourselves and we begin to convince ourselves it is out of reach.
I hear you, and I’m here with you in this crazy life we call motherhood.
I want you to know - it is possible (and SO important) to take those tiny moments for yourself.
Today, I’m going to share three tips on how to make self-care simple and give yourself the break you need.
With a few mindset shifts, it is possible and it is simpler than you think.
❖Tip #1: Make it easy
Are you believing this myth that has been going around…
That self-care has to be a grand gesture?
This couldn’t be more wrong—in fact, any self-care is going to be beneficial.
Just because you don’t have time for a day at the spa or a whole weekend to yourself, doesn’t mean that small gestures won’t help.
Here are a few self-care small gesture ideas:
Grabbing a coffee
Taking a five-minute walk
Noticing something you’re grateful for
Some other small gesture ideas:
Taking 5 deep breaths
Take a shower
Do a mini workout
Small gestures = HUGE potential
As you incorporate more of them, they add up.
A grand gesture is nice, once in a while, but in the long run, it’s the small steps that will get you far.
❖Tip #2: Make it personal
Self-care is not the same for everyone—you have to find what works for you.
Karen down the hall may think self-care is getting a manicure every weekend…
But for you that might sound horrible.
Taking a hike in the woods may seem like therapy to one person, but torture to another.
We are all unique human beings with unique needs—there is no one size fits all.
Here’s what I learned to be true for me:
There are so many ways, big and small, that you can practice self-care.
The only person it needs to feel right for is YOU—take some time to find out what brings you joy and do those things.
It’s completely okay if you don’t enjoy or find stress relief in things that others around you do.
The most effective self-care practice is going to be what feels right - not a copy-and-paste approach.
❖Tip #3: Recognize the value
It can be easy to assume that self-care is selfish.
The mom guilt sets in, and you feel guilty for having someone else help out.
The work guilt sets in, and you resent not staying late or overachieving.
What if you shifted your perspective around this:
If you don’t take the time for self-care, how will things get any better?
It’s time to recognize how much self-care does for you in return.
It's not a waste of time as it:
Makes you more patient because you gave time to release those negative emotions that have built up from a busy life.
Gives your body a momentary break from stress.
Refuels your body and your mind so you can best show up for anything in your life
Self-care is going to make you better in every area of your life.
Micro-moments of Self-Care
Motherhood is crazy, but I hope you realize how important it is to make self-care a priority to get the breaks you need.
Again, the three tips I covered are:
1️⃣ Make it easy.
2️⃣ Make it personal.
3️⃣ Recognize the value.
Once you start accepting these three truths, you will be amazed at how inserting self-care throughout the micro-moments in your day can do for you overall.
